Understanding the TRICARE Credentialing Process with Alpaca Health

Last updated: July 23, 2026

This article explains how TRICARE credentialing works at Alpaca Health, what to expect during the process, and how to check on the status of a provider's credentialing application.

How to Start the Credentialing Process

To begin TRICARE credentialing for a provider, they must complete the Alpaca Health credentialing intake form. Once submitted, our credentialing team will initiate the process. If a provider does not appear in our credentialing system, it is likely because this form has not yet been completed.

What Is Required for TRICARE Credentialing

The following items are typically required before a credentialing application can be submitted to TRICARE:

  • Background check: A recent background check is required for all providers. If you do not have one on file, our credentialing team can send you a link to complete one.

  • CAQH profile: Your CAQH profile must be updated and attested.

  • CPR/BLS certification: A valid CPR/BLS certificate is required.

  • Active BACB status: The provider's BACB certification must be active.

  • NPI number (for RBTs): RBTs credentialing with TRICARE need an NPI number. Note that TRICARE requires waiting 10 business days after NPI issuance before credentialing can proceed.

  • RBT taxonomy in NPPES (for RBTs): RBTs must add the RBT taxonomy code (106S00000X) to their NPPES profile before enrollment can proceed.

How Long Does TRICARE Credentialing Take?

Once all required documents are submitted and the background check is complete, the credentialing application is sent to TRICARE. The typical processing time after submission is approximately 14 days (2 weeks). Keep in mind that delays in completing prerequisites (such as the background check) will extend the overall timeline.

Can a Provider See Clients Before Credentialing Is Complete?

In general, RBT services cannot begin prior to the official TRICARE authorization approval date. Services must be rendered within the approved authorization period to ensure compliance and proper reimbursement.

In some cases, TRICARE may backdate billing to the date of application submission — but this is not guaranteed. We recommend waiting for official approval before beginning services unless otherwise advised by our team.

RBT Credentialing Requirements by Payer

Credentialing requirements differ by insurance payer:

  • TRICARE: RBTs must be individually credentialed with TRICARE before seeing TRICARE clients. This includes completing a background check, having an NPI, and going through the full enrollment process.

  • HMSA: RBTs are not required to be individually credentialed with HMSA. As long as the provider holds an active RBT credential, they can work with HMSA clients.
